When a fire breaks out in your facility, the extinguisher on the wall has to do two things: work the moment someone pulls the pin, and be close enough to reach before a small flame becomes an uncontrollable one. The only way to guarantee both is a regular fire extinguisher inspection performed by someone who knows what to look for.

But here’s what many Iowa business owners miss: fire extinguisher inspection isn’t one-size-fits-all. A restaurant kitchen, a grain elevator, a machine shop, and a server room face completely different fire risks, require completely different extinguisher types, and have different rules for where those extinguishers must be mounted. An inspection that treats your facility like a generic office building can leave dangerous gaps, and costly code violations.

Why Fire Extinguisher Inspection Matters in Every Industry

Under NFPA 10 (the national standard for portable fire extinguishers) and the fire codes adopted throughout Iowa, extinguishers require:

  • Monthly visual checks, confirming each unit is in its designated spot, unobstructed, charged, and undamaged. Your own staff can perform these.
  • Annual maintenance inspections, a hands-on service by a certified technician who verifies pressure, inspects hoses and seals, checks the agent, and tags the unit.
  • Internal maintenance and hydrostatic testing, at longer intervals (typically 5, 6, or 12 years depending on the extinguisher type) to verify the cylinder itself can safely hold pressure.

Miss any of these and you’re exposed twice: first to the fire itself, and second to the inspector who writes you up for it. Restaurants & Commercial Kitchens

Primary fire risks: Cooking oils and greases (Class K), electrical equipment (Class C), ordinary combustibles in dining and storage areas (Class A).

Extinguishers you need:

  • Class K wet chemical extinguishers in the kitchen. Standard ABC extinguishers cannot safely handle a deep fryer fire, the dry chemical won’t saponify hot grease the way a Class K agent does, and the blast can actually splash burning oil.
  • ABC dry chemical units for dining rooms, offices, and storage areas.
  • CO₂ extinguishers near electrical panels and equipment where powder residue would damage components.

Where they belong: NFPA 10 requires a Class K extinguisher within 30 feet of commercial cooking equipment, close enough to grab mid-emergency, but not mounted directly over the fryer where flames would block access. ABC units should sit along exit paths in dining and storage areas, mounted visibly with the top of the extinguisher no more than 5 feet off the floor.

Manufacturing & Industrial Facilities

Primary fire risks: Flammable liquids and solvents (Class B), energized machinery (Class C), combustible dust and packaging (Class A), and, in metalworking operations, combustible metals like magnesium, titanium, and sodium (Class D).

Extinguishers you need:

  • ABC dry chemical as the workhorse throughout general production areas.
  • BC or Purple K dry chemical near flammable liquid storage, dip tanks, and fueling areas, Purple K is significantly more effective on pressurized flammable liquid fires than standard sodium bicarbonate.
  • Met-L-X (Class D) extinguishers wherever combustible metal shavings, powders, or castings are produced. Water and ABC agents can make a metal fire violently worse; only a Class D agent smothers it safely.
  • Foam extinguishers for facilities with large flammable liquid pools or storage.

Where they belong: Class A coverage requires an extinguisher within 75 feet of travel from any point; Class B hazards tighten that to 30–50 feet depending on hazard severity. Mount Class D units immediately at the machining or processing station that creates the metal hazard, a Class D fire gives you no time to run across the plant.

Agriculture, Grain Handling & Co-ops

Iowa’s backbone, and one of its highest-risk fire environments. Grain dust is explosive, fuel is everywhere, and many structures are unheated.

Extinguishers you need:

  • ABC dry chemical in barns, shops, elevators, and on equipment.
  • BC or Purple K near fuel storage, propane, and refueling stations.
  • Antifreeze solution extinguishers for unheated buildings. This one matters in Iowa: a standard water extinguisher in an unheated machine shed will freeze solid by December. Antifreeze units stay operational through our winters.
  • Water pressure extinguishers for heated spaces with hay, straw, bedding, and other Class A materials.

Where they belong: At every building entrance, on or near fueling points, inside grain handling structures at each level, and mounted on large equipment like combines and grain dryers. Because agricultural buildings are often spread out, don’t rely on one central unit, the 75-foot travel rule applies per structure.

Healthcare, Clinics & Long-Term Care

Primary fire risks: Electrical equipment (Class C), oxygen-enriched environments, ordinary combustibles like linens and paper (Class A), kitchen operations (Class K).

Extinguishers you need:

  • Water mist extinguishers in patient care areas, they’re effective on Class A and C fires, leave no residue, and pose no inhalation hazard to vulnerable patients.
  • CO₂ or clean agent (Halotron, CleanGuard) near imaging equipment, labs, and electrical rooms where residue would destroy sensitive devices.
  • ABC dry chemical in mechanical spaces, storage, and administrative areas.
  • Class K in facility kitchens.

Where they belong: In corridors at intervals meeting the 75-foot travel distance, near nurses’ stations, at electrical and mechanical rooms, and in kitchens per the 30-foot Class K rule. Offices, Retail & Commercial Buildings

Primary fire risks: Ordinary combustibles (Class A), electrical (Class C).

Extinguishers you need:

  • ABC dry chemical covers the vast majority of needs.
  • CO₂ or Halotron in server closets and IT rooms.
  • Water mist as a clean, low-residue option for open office environments.

Where they belong: Along normal paths of travel, near exits and stairwells, and within 75 feet of any occupied point. Extinguishers should never be stashed in closets, hidden behind displays, or blocked by inventory, visibility and access are two of the most common violations inspectors cite.

Data Centers, Server Rooms & Telecommunications

Primary fire risks: Energized electrical equipment (Class C) where any residue means catastrophic equipment loss.

Extinguishers you need:

  • Halotron or CleanGuard clean agent extinguishers, these discharge as a gas, suppress the fire, and evaporate without residue.
  • CO₂ extinguishers as a proven residue-free option.

Where they belong: At the entrance to the server room (so responders grab one on the way in), inside the room near aisle ends, and at electrical distribution panels. Never protect an IT space with only a dry chemical unit, the powder is corrosive to electronics and can total equipment the fire never touched.

Automotive, Fleet & Fuel Operations

Primary fire risks: Gasoline, diesel, oils, and solvents (Class B), vehicle electrical systems (Class C).

Extinguishers you need:

  • BC or Purple K dry chemical for fuel and flammable liquid hazards.
  • Foam extinguishers for fuel spill scenarios.
  • ABC dry chemical for general shop coverage.

Where they belong: Within 30–50 feet of fuel dispensing and storage per Class B requirements, at each service bay, near waste oil and solvent storage, and at building exits.

Schools, Universities & Public Buildings

Extinguishers you need: ABC dry chemical throughout; Class K in cafeterias; CO₂ or clean agent in computer labs and shops; Met-L-X in any lab or industrial arts space that works with combustible metals; water mist in areas serving young children or vulnerable populations.

Where they belong: In corridors meeting travel distance requirements, in every specialty space (kitchen, lab, shop, boiler room) matched to that room’s specific hazard, and always mounted at accessible height with clear signage.

Placement Rules That Apply Everywhere

Whatever your industry, these fundamentals hold:

  • Travel distance: Max 75 feet to a Class A extinguisher, 30–50 feet for Class B hazards, 30 feet for Class K.
  • Mounting height: Extinguishers under 40 lbs. mount with the top no more than 5 feet above the floor; heavier units no more than 3.5 feet. Nothing sits on the floor.
  • Visibility and access: Never blocked, never hidden, marked with signage where sightlines are obstructed.
  • Along the way out: Extinguishers belong on egress paths, so using one never means moving deeper into a building away from an exit.
