Regular maintenance of fire extinguishers is not only essential for safety—it’s also required by law. According to NFPA 10, “fire extinguishers must be maintained annually in accordance with local, state, and national codes and regulations.” Similarly, OSHA standard 1910.157(e)(3) states that “employers shall assure that portable fire extinguishers are subjected to an annual maintenance check.”

Did you know?

Using the wrong extinguisher on a specialty fire can make it worse. Water on a grease fire causes violent flare-ups, and standard agents can react explosively with burning metals. If your facility has a commercial kitchen, metal shop, or high-voltage equipment, matching the extinguisher to the hazard is critical.
